Interview with author Adriana Locke

1 – Have you always wanted to be a writer?

Yes, off and on. I had so many interests and dreams growing up, but books have always been something I’m inherently drawn to.

2 – When you start a book series – do you know the couples who will appear in the following books? Do you know what the plot will be?

I usually know one of them. My series are family series, so I know the siblings will all have a book. Often times, however, I do not know who they will be paired with. I might know the theme or trope or I might not. I like to give the characters and families a little wiggle room to show me what fits best.

3 – Did you write a book and decide not to publish it?

I have one book written that I have not published. I will someday. There’s something not quite right about it and I haven’t worked it out. I’ve set it aside and will circle back to it later.

4 – In the book Craft – You chose to create an infertile character (Which is very rare in the genre) – Why did you decide to do it anyway?

My tagline is “ordinary people finding extraordinary love”. I really want my readers to be able to see themselves or their sisters or friends in my characters. I want them to relate. Infertility is a theme in more than one of my books; it’s something so many people face. I’m not sure why it wouldn’t be included.

5 – Is there a topic you will never write about? If so, what is it?

I write what I know. I think it’s the best way for me to make my books and characters and the emotions they experience feel authentic. I like to leave the subjects I’m not familiar with for the voices that can do them justice.

6 – By what do you choose a cover for a book?

If it’s a standalone that’s unrelated to my other books, I usually choose a man for the cover. If it’s a series book, I pick couples. It’s an easy way to tell them apart.

My designer, Kari March, and I brainstorm ways to set the cover apart from other covers of mine yet keep it true to my brand with fun pops of color. I’ll usually find a photo that matches the couple or the vibe of the story and we’ll take it from there.

7 – Where did you get the inspiration for the stories?

Inspiration is everywhere! Songs, poems, conversations at grocery stores.

8 – Who is your favorite couple you wrote about?

That’s really hard to say and it changes every day. It’s usually the couple I’m writing at the moment.

9 – How long does it take you to write one book?

That depends on the book. Sometimes I can bust a book out in two weeks. Others take months or even a year.

10 – What is your favorite genre to read?

Romance, of course!

11 – Who are your favorite writers?

There are so many. I love Kristy Bromberg, Jessica Hawkins, Kennedy Ryan. KA Linde does YA Fantasy so well. CJ Roberts and Madeline Sheehan for the darker side of romance are my go-tos.

12 – If you could turn one of your books into a movie – which book would you choose?

Sacrifice. Hands down. I think seeing it on the big screen would be magical.
